Fallout 4 Resources

Resource gathering in Fallout 4 is one of those things that feels straightforward until you're spending hours hopping from settlement to settlement or trying to figure out which of your settlement supply lines has the resources you need. The Commonwealth is packed with materials, but knowing what to pick up, what to break down, and where to farm efficiently makes the difference between a functional base and a scrap graveyard.

Whether you're building out a settlement, modding weapons, or keeping your armor upgraded, you're going to need a steady supply of the right components. This searchable database covers base game resources and the most commonly needed DLC materials from Far Harbor and Nuka-World, so you can plan your farming runs without tabbing out to six different wikis.

Getting Started with Resource Gathering

Unlike Fallout 76, you're not competing with other players for spawns, which means you can take your time and be methodical. The downside is that resources don't respawn on a timer you can exploit the same way. You're working off a fixed world with reset cycles, so having a rotation matters.

The first thing to learn early is to scrap junk at your workbench rather than carrying raw components. If you don’t have the materials to create a workbench to scrap your junk, just store your junk in the workshop and any time you need materials to build something, the workshop automatically breaks down the corresponding junk and uses its materials. Your carry weight will thank you, and the Scrapper perk makes a significant difference once you're modding gear regularly. If you're planning to build settlements seriously, prioritize Adhesive and Concrete early. They both disappear fast, and neither are as easy to replenish as Steel or Wood.

Corvega Assembly Plant is one of the best early locations in the game to farm. It's packed with junk that break down into aluminum, copper, oil, and screws. But beware because it’s also packed with enemies. But that means you're getting good XP and loot on the same run. Pair that with a swing through the Red Rocket Truck Stop nearby, and you've covered most of your common material needs in one loop.

Also, don’t overlook merchants in Fallout 4. Arturo in Diamond City stocks copper and aluminum. The general merchants in settlements restock on a 48-hour in-game timer, so if you're short on a specific material, it's often faster to buy it than to run another dungeon. Building a supply network between settlements also transfers materials across your workbenches automatically, which is worth setting up before you start any serious build project.

High-Value Resources

Some materials are technically common but become bottlenecks the moment you start modding. Others are rare from the start and stay that way. Either way, these are the ones worth tracking intentionally rather than hoping you stumble across enough.

Adhesive is the one that surprises most players. It shows up in Wonderglue and duct tape often enough that it feels plentiful early on, but weapon and armor mods eat through it faster than almost anything else. The most reliable long-term solution is cooking Vegetable Starch at a cooking station: one corn, one mutfruit, one tato, and one purified water yields five adhesive. Set up those crops at a settlement early and you'll never run dry.

Ballistic Fiber is the material most players go looking for right before they need it. It only comes from military gear: ammo bags, fatigues, army helmets. Fort Hagen and the National Guard Training Yard are your best bets, but the supply is finite per reset cycle. If you're pushing heavy armor upgrades, buy every military-tagged junk item you see from vendors before you need it.

Circuitry becomes a problem the deeper you go into weapon mods. Typewriters, hot plates, and telephones are your primary breakdown sources, and they're common enough in offices. The issue is that demand outpaces supply if you're modding frequently. The Diamond City supply network helps, but don't pass up a RobCo terminal run when you need a top-up.

Nuclear Material is the scarcest resource in the base game with no reliable merchant source. The Glowing Sea has the highest density, but it's a hostile area with radiation to match. Alarm clocks and biometric scanners are your best breakdown options outside of direct exploration; save every one you find.

Fallout 4's Commonwealth rewards players who pay attention to what they're picking up, not just what they're shooting. Once you know which junk items yield which components, looting shifts from a chore into something closer to a puzzle: the right desk fan gives you gears, screws, and steel in one pickup. A few farming routes, a solid supply network, and the Scrapper perk will keep you stocked through late game without grinding.
