Video Games with Black Protagonists:
The Complete, Searchable Database

Black characters have been part of gaming since 1982. The leads, the co-leads, the fighters, the NPCs who carried entire games on their backs without ever getting top billing: they have always been here. This database is GNL's ongoing effort to name them, catalog them, and give Black gamers a reference that doesn't require digging through five different Reddit threads to find what they're looking for.

Use the search box and filters below to explore more than 95 games featuring Black protagonists, co-leads, and significant playable Black characters. The list pulls from GNL's original research, our game coverage, and the Wikipedia category for games with Black protagonists. GNL updates it as new titles release.

About this database

This database catalogs games where a Black character holds a primary lead role, shares the protagonist role as a co-lead, or is a significant playable character in an ensemble or fighting roster. It includes both strong and stereotyped representation, because the full picture matters. Stereotyped entries are flagged.

Where we've made judgment calls on racial coding, biracial characters, or ambiguous origins, we've noted them. This list pulls from the Wikipedia category for games with Black protagonists and GNL's own research and coverage.

How to use it

Type any word in the search box to filter across all columns. Use the dropdowns to narrow by genre, platform, or decade. Click any column header to sort. "GNL covered" marks games with editorial coverage on GNL Magazine. "Co-lead" marks games where a Black character shares the protagonist role. "Stereotyped" flags representations that reduce Black characters to tired tropes.
