GTA 6 Disc Version, Pre-Order Numbers, and Retailer Boycotts: What's Confirmed and What Isn't

Here’s a breakdown of all the rumors circulating about GTA 6 since pre-orders went live: what Rockstar has confirmed and what remains unverified.

Since GTA 6 pre-orders went live on June 25, 2026, several claims have been circulating across gaming outlets and social media about disc versions, pre-order sales figures, and retailer responses. Here is what is confirmed, what is credibly reported but unverified, and what remains speculation.

Confirmed: The Physical Edition Has No Disc

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the physical edition of GTA 6, available for pre-order now ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch, contains a download code rather than a disc. The boxed copy is basically a digital purchase. It cannot be resold, lent out, or used without an internet connection. Pre-loading begins November 12, one week before launch.

Confirmed: Two Retailers Are Refusing to Carry It

Video Games Plus, a Canadian retailer that has operated for nearly four decades, confirmed on X that GTA 6's physical edition falls outside its stocking policy. "Our company policy is that we do not carry physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code," the statement read, adding that VGP holds "tremendous respect for Rockstar Games" but will hold off both online and in-store unless a disc version eventually ships. Loot Box Gaming, a US-based physical media retailer, made a similar statement, confirming it will not support the release of GTA 6 if the code-in-box format holds. LBG reposted a petition for physical copies from their competitor, PNP Games. Both VGP and LBG retailers stated they would carry a disc version if one becomes available.

Credibly Reported but Unconfirmed: A Disc Version is Coming in December

The claim originates from insider Graczdari via Polish outlet PPE.pl. The same source correctly leaked in March 2026 that GTA 6 would not ship with a disc at launch, a claim Take-Two initially denied before it was confirmed. Graczdari's position is that the code-in-box release will be one run only, after which a disc-based edition will follow, with a December 2026 release expected. Adding weight to the claim, Rockstar support emails sent to customers who inquired about disc copies stated that a physical version would be available in the "following months" after launch, though there is no explicit mention of a disc and the possibility of the response being a generic or AI-generated reply has not been ruled out. Rockstar and Take-Two have not officially confirmed a disc release.

Unconfirmed: 39 Million Pre-Orders and $3 Billion in Revenue

Reports claiming GTA 6 has surpassed 39 million pre-orders worldwide, generating more than $3 billion in pre-launch revenue, have been circulating widely since pre-orders opened. No original source for this figure has been clearly attributed, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has released official pre-order numbers. The figure most likely comes DFC Intelligence analysts’ projections made in December 2024 rather than a confirmed sales total. Take-Two's stock did rise approximately 4% in morning trading following the pre-order announcement, which reflects investor confidence in the launch even if the specific sales figure remains unverified.

Confirmed: Payment Timing Varies by Storefront

If you have already pre-ordered or are planning to, the timing of when you are charged depends on where you bought the game. PlayStation Store charges immediately at the time of pre-order. Xbox charges up to 10 days before the game's November 19 release date. Amazon does not charge until the order ships, just before launch. Retailer-specific pre-orders may vary.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Pre-orders are live now at Rockstar Games.
